Rescuer Brecht saved the life of a newborn baby: ‘Resuscitation started immediately’

Brecht Berteloot was a rescuer on the beach of De Panne last Sunday when he received a remarkable report. A woman had given birth in the public toilets on the beach, but the baby gave no sign of life.

“Start resuscitation immediately”

“When I arrived, the baby had just been born but with no sign of life. I immediately started CPR until the emergency services arrived. And in the meantime I was well supported by colleagues who cleared the way for the emergency services and kept spectators at a distance,” says Brecht.

Born two months premature

Brecht has practiced a heart massage on a doll countless times, but the resuscitation of the baby has left its mark on the Language and Literature student. “Tomorrow I have my last exam and studying is not going so well, but it is a distraction that allows me to take my mind off things. I think or I fear that it will only really come in after that exam”, concludes Brecht.

The baby was born two months premature. Brecht does not know how the child is doing now, but the baby is alive and that is thanks to Brecht.
