Report: TSG Hoffenheim is courting Hannover’s Köhn – an alternative to Angelino

96 professional has an opt-out clause

There is hardly any other position at TSG Hoffenheim that has had a higher turnover in recent years than that of left-back. Director of professional football Alexander Rosen must also find a new solution for the coming season, as the option to buy Angeliño on loan is too expensive and the 26-year-old will return to RB Leipzig. According to the “Picture” the Kraichgauer are interested in Derrick Köhn from Hannover 96.

The 24-year-old was one of the top performers in Lower Saxony and scored five goals and six assists in 33 second division appearances. He would be an offensively strong option for the left flank that fits perfectly into Hoffenheim’s game system, which almost exclusively uses a three-man or five-man chain.

In recent years, this position has been filled by a different professional almost every season. Before Angeliño, David Raum played his way into the national team before moving to Leipzig in an exchange with the Spaniard. Before that it was loan player Ryan Sessegnon (2020/21) and a year earlier Robert Skov (2019/20), who is now used on the right and followed Nico Schulz (until 2018/19).

Köhn could become the sixth-year left-back and would be a far cheaper option compared to Angeliño. While the former Manchester City professional would be available for 20 million euros, the Hanoverian has an exit clause of 3 million euros, according to “Bild”. The native of Hamburg therefore wants to take the next step in his career. However, TSG is not alone in courting the left foot, FC Valencia, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Mainz 05 were also discussed in the TM rumor mill.
