Report: Hertha BSC waving over 20 million from loan players

Agreed purchase options

Hertha BSC has been in a state of permanent upheaval for years. After investor Lars Windhorst came on board in the summer of 2019, many players were initially bought, and managing director Fredi Bobic, who has since been dismissed, has slimmed down the squad again in the last year and a half (28 departures in 2022/23). A total of eight professionals are currently on loan from the “old lady” to other clubs – and could flush a lot of money into the coffers in the summer.

Santiago Ascacíbar, for example, was handed over to Club Estudiantes de La Plata in his native Argentina after a previous loan to US Cremonese. The 25-year-old, who still has a contract in Berlin until 2024, is set there and has been in the starting XI in all five competitive games so far. According to a report by “Bild”, a return to Germany is extremely unlikely, especially since the club from the Liga Profesional has a purchase option of 3 million euros and also wants to stay as the midfielder himself.

A similar situation as with Ascacíbar, Hertha also finds with some other loan players. Krzysztof Piatek (27) can be signed from US Salernitana for €9m, Getafe FC would have to pay €7.5m for Omar Alderete (26) and Deyovaisio Zeefuik (24) and Hellas Verona have a fixed price of 1 million euros agreed. In addition, the report mentions an option in the “low millions” for Myziane Maolida (24) and Stade Reims. With the exception of Zeefuik, all are set at their current stations.

All in all, Hertha can earn more than 20 million euros in the summer just by purchasing options from hired professionals. Three other transfers without departures have already been confirmed: Fabian Reese (25) is coming from Holstein Kiel on a free transfer, while Marvin Plattenhardt (31) and Kevin-Prince Boateng (36; end of career) will leave the club without proceeds.
