According to media reports, FC Barcelona has intensified its efforts to sign German international Ilkay Gündogan. In the past there had been speculation that the Catalans were interested in the 32-year-old Manchester City captain – now the player’s uncle and adviser is said to have met with the sporting officials of the LaLiga club.
This was first reported by the Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, who posted a video about it on social media. Whether the exchange was actually about the future of the German can at least be questioned – Ilhan Gündogan also represents Barça professional Andreas Christensen, among others. Ilkay Gündogan, now the longest-serving professional in the Skyblues squad after Kevin De Bruyne, still has a contract with City until the summer and could leave the club for free after seven years. With a market value of 25 million euros, Gündogan is currently the most valuable German footballer available for free in the summer. This means that he can already negotiate with potential clubs or sign with a new club – without having to take the current employer into account.

The media had already reported in mid-January on a possible move from Manchester to Barcelona. In the past it was said that Gündogan made staying in Manchester dependent on the future of his coach Pep Guardiola, but he had already signed a new contract with the “Citizens” in November. For the midfielder, after the Bundesliga and Premier League, LaLiga would be the third European top-five league where he could prove himself.
