Plastic pollution is a “serious, increasing and underestimated threat”, which costs at least $ 1,500 billion annually worldwide (1,297 billion euros). This is evident on Monday from an overview study that was published in medical trade journal ‘The Lancet’. The study appears the day before the start of the final round of UN negotiations on a global treaty for plastic pollution. The Belgian delegation believes that an agreement will be reached during the top in Geneva.
