The replica was made by artist Riny Assink, who worked on it in his shed for years. “I really started building about six years ago and have been working on it constantly,” he says.
Spectators who came to see the carriage are enthusiastic. “I think it’s great. Something always happens with us in the Jordaan,” says an enthusiastic visitor. Another calls the carriage “really beautiful.”
Paintings of animals
The real one was once a gift from the Jordaan to Queen Wilhelmina. That is why Assink wanted to give this replica to the Jordanians for a day. By the way, it is not an exact copy: the paintings that refer to the past of slavery have been replaced by animals. “I like that it has a dachshund on it,” said a passerby.
