Reopening of the Palazzo Trussardi brings together fashion, food and culture

Inaugurated 26 years ago by Nicola Trussardi, Palazzo Trussardi is experiencing a renaissance. The building in the heart of Milan has been transformed into a lifestyle hub for fashion, food and culture, the Italian label announced on Wednesday.

Palazzo Trussardi has always been a meeting point, blurring the lines between fashion and culture as one of the first concept stores of its time – a thought that is now set to be revived. The building houses the fashion label’s 260 square meter flagship store and a café and restaurant, both run by Michelin-starred chef Giancarlo Perbellini.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved together with our architects and creative directors,” says Trussardi Managing Director Sebastian Suhl. “The Palazzo Trussardi is very much alive again and embodies the spirit of the New Trussardi: inclusivity and timeless, modern elegance.”

“We have been looking forward to this day since we started last year. We are very happy to revive this historic address for Trussardi and for the city of Milan,” says the creative director duo Benjamin Huseby and Serhat Işık, who are also behind the Berliner Labels GmbH

The design of the new Palazzo Trussardi

At the center of the Palazzo Trussardi is a 25 meter long mirrored wall of shelves that diagonally divides the ground floor. This reflects the Piazza della Scala, home of the famous opera house and at the same time separates the retail space from Café Trussardi. The dividing element is also a metaphor for the renewal of the brand under the direction of the two Berlin designers.

The associated restaurant is located one floor up on the top floor of the building. Nevertheless, a “seamless connection between food and fashion” should be established through various architectural elements, the statement explains.

History meets modernity

For the redesign and furnishing of the historic building, the label worked with a creative team that included the Berlin architects Bplus.xyz and the designer Thorben Gröbel, who created the furniture for the sales area. “We are extremely grateful to everyone involved, especially the Bplus.xyz team of architects, who made this project a collaborative effort in which we all feel very strongly and personally involved,” emphasized Huseby and Işık.

The conversions began with the excavation of the building’s foundations, the statement said. The history of the palazzo served as a framework for the process and is the basis for the concept of “material honesty”. The idea behind this is that materials should be used in accordance with their properties and environment. The final result is characterized by the contrast between the historic heritage of the building and the new contemporary design. In addition, recycling and processing are at the heart of the project. Should another renovation take place in the future, Bplus.xyz undertakes to reuse the furnishings made for the building.
