Renovated Market Square and De Tramstation opened in Kuurne

Kuurne wants to depave and create squares again where people can meet. There were two parking lots, a gray concrete surface. But the Market Square and the Tram Station have now become meeting places with greenery and water. “We have also seen the heat islands that we now see every day, that we really have to go green because it is also fresher in the green there. We have already made that choice,” says Alderman for Mobility and Climate Annelies Vandenbussche .

The biggest innovation is underground

Perhaps the biggest innovation is underground, the separate sewerage system and the heating network, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions. Schools and homes can connect to the heating network. The center renovation is also part of 900 years of Kuurne. “We became an urbanized municipality in the 1990s, a brick-and-mortar municipality. And we are now creating green fingers with beautiful places, where the challenges of climate and cycling safety are ultimately combined and tackled,” adds Mayor Francis Benoit. After two years of waiting for the center renovation, today was a party for residents and traders. Without music, because the dancers were wearing headphones.
