Unai Emery is the new manager of Premier League club Aston Villa. The Spaniard succeeds team manager Steven Gerrard, who was released a few days ago.

As the club from Birmingham confirmed on Monday evening (24.10.22), Unai Emery will take over as coach at the fourteenth place in the table. Accordingly, Aston Villa paid the exit clause of six million euros to free the Spaniard from FC Villarreal.

Emery will begin work on November 1st. According to the club announcement, the 50-year-old still has to clarify formalities relating to his work permit. In the upcoming away game on Saturday (4 p.m.) at Newcastle United, the team will again be coached by interim coach Aaron Danks. His first game as head coach will be the home game against Manchester United a week later.

Liverpool legend Gerrard took over as manager at Aston Villa in November 2021 and was fired last week after a poor start to the season. English media had also brought Thomas Tuchel into play as a successor.

With Arsenal in the Premier League

Emery already has Premier League experience, having coached Arsenal from 2018-2019. There is also an engagement at Paris St. Germain and three consecutive Europa League titles with Sevilla FC (2014 to 2016). The 50-year-old has been coaching Villarreal since 2020, with whom he knocked Bayern out of the Champions League last season. In 2021 he also won the Europa League with Villarreal.
