Reis should remain in relegation – VfL Bochum is pursuing a clear strategy

Extend contract “2, 3 years”.

Coach Thomas Reis is to stay at VfL Bochum in the long term. “We want to extend it for a standard market term of two or three years,” said Bochum’s supervisory board chairman Hans-Peter Villis before Sunday’s Bundesliga home game against Bayern Munich (5:30 p.m.) of “Bild”. Reis’ current contract expires next summer.

VfL, 17th in the table after two Bundesliga matchdays, is one of the relegation candidates this season after surprisingly staying up in the league last year. But even with a descent, the 48-year-old Reis should stay: “As of now, we want to continue working with him. We trust him 100 percent,” said Villis, 64.

Not directly addressed to this point, but in line with the topic, VfL CFO Ilja Kaenzig said in one go Interview with the “Handelsblatt”: “Good leadership and transparency are becoming increasingly important – also in football. We wanted to be at the forefront of this development. Because if we do the same as everyone else, we don’t stand a chance with our financial resources. So we have to choose other means to set ourselves apart from the competition in the Bundesliga.”

In March, Bochum was the first German club to have the so-called “Sports Governance Code“ signed for sustainable management in sports companies. A sustainable occupation of the coaching post with promotion coach Reis would fit the goals of the voluntary, self-imposed set of rules.

Kaenzig, who referred to a survey according to which Bochum had 17.9 million sympathizers nationwide, continued: “The decisive factor is the interaction: what happens on the pitch, the way the players represent the club, identification with the VfL. A clear positioning and a clear strategy that creates trust helps us here.
