New in the database

The TM database is enriched by another milestone: The 1965/66 season of the then second-class Regionalliga West can be viewed with all game reports. Fortuna Düsseldorf became champions, Rot-Weiss Essen secured second place. Both clubs took part in the subsequent round of promotion to the Bundesliga and prevailed in their respective groups: Düsseldorf left Pirmasens, Hertha BSC and Kickers Offenbach behind, while RWE secured the group victory ahead of FC St. Pauli, 1. FC Saarbrücken and Schweinfurt 05 won.

In the regular season, today’s first division teams VfL Bochum and Bayer Leverkusen as well as second division team Arminia Bielefeld were also involved. The top scorer was the third in the final standings, Alemannia Aachen, with Alfred Glenski. The former striker had 24 goals. Karl-Heinz Feldkamp, who later became a German champion with 1. FC Kaiserslautern and also won the DFB Cup three times, also left their mark. In addition, Willi “Ente” Lippens was active in his first season with Rot-Weiss Essen and Erwin Kostedde, who made his debut in men’s football for Preußen Münster.

There were big differences in the number of visitors at the time. While Düsseldorf and Essen were the only clubs that attracted more than 16,000 fans on average, Eintracht Duisburg drew less than 2,500 per game.
