Five leagues, but only four promoted teams: That’s the dilemma in Germany’s fourth division of footballers. One of the champions from the regional leagues will not be promoted to the 3rd league after the 2021/22 season, i.e. the area that officially counts as profit. This time it hits the master from the North or Northeast.
In March 2020, the German Football Association (DFB) decided that a rotation would be introduced. In addition to the two champions from the West and Southwest squadrons, who have guaranteed promotion, another champion is to be promoted directly. Last season it was the champion from the north-east with Viktoria Berlin, this season it will be the champion from Bavaria.
The champions from the north and northeast will therefore play off another promoted team in the first and second leg (without an away goals rule).
Northeast: BFC Dynamo just need a point
According to the current status, it looks very much like a duel between BFC Dynamo and VfB Oldenburg. The Berliners, who are record champions in the GDR thanks to the influence of the Ministry for State Security, only need one point from the remaining three games in the Northeast season to become champions. The BFC has never been represented in all-German professional football.
