Millions of Britons cast their votes in local elections in England, Scotland and Wales on Thursday. The first forecast shows an advantage for Reform UK, Nigel Farage’s radical right party. The party stands according to the BBC with a gain of more than two hundred seats.
That is a major blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor Party. So far, the party has lost more than fifty percent of the seats it tried to defend. Labor politician Rebecca Long Bailey says to the BBC that it is a “heartbreaking evening.” “We have lost a large number of good Labor councilors and candidates,” the Long Bailey said.
The elections concern almost five thousand seats in local councils in England and for parliaments in Scotland and Wales. Traditionally, the United Kingdom has had a two-party system, with either the Labor Party or the Conservatives ruling. But these elections could throw that system into disarray.
However, it will remain exciting for the time being, because many municipalities will only announce the results during Friday afternoon. The result in London in particular will be decisive.
