An unusual interpretation of the coin toss in the Istanbul derby between Besiktas and Fenerbahce has brought the Turkish Football Association TFF to the scene.
Referee Arda Kardesler apparently carried out the side selection with a coin bearing the logo of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. This was recorded in photos. The TFF launched an investigation on Monday.
The association “resolutely rejects the procedure,” it said in a brief statement. The referee tossed the coin “without the knowledge and consent” of the TFF and the Association of Impartials (MHK). The game on Sunday ended 1:1.
Besiktas initially did not comment. The main sponsor of the club from the coming season is a crypto asset platform.
