Red-blue lions roar again at Haarlem’s Jan Gijzenkade: "Shirt is special"

It has been almost fourteen years since HFC Haarlem was declared bankrupt. The famous professional club on the Jan Gijzenkade would have existed for 134 years last weekend. And to draw attention to this, the HFC Haarlem 1889 Foundation and FC Haarlem-Kennemerland organized the Piet Huijg Cup. “That shirt is special.”

The Piet Huijg Cup is named after the legendary former player Piet Huijg. In total, the robust defender played fourteen seasons for the Roodbroeken. Huijg is also the scorer of Haarlem’s last European goal. In the autumn of 1982 against the Russian Spartak Moscow.

In addition to HFC Haarlem, RCH from Heemstede, Koninklijke HFC and FC Haarlem-Kennemerland also participated in the Piet Huijg Cup. The first prize went to the former professionals from Haarlem. They received the cup from Ilse Huijg, daughter of Piet.
