Record number of speeding fines issued last year | VTM News

In the first half of 2021, between January and June, 12,810 speeding violations per day were recorded. This exceeds the record number of 4,060,468 fines from 2020. “That is unforeseen, and we can infer that a lot of people have seen the calmer roads as an invitation to press the accelerator a little deeper,” said Touring spokesman Danny Smagghe.

In a period of five years, the number of speeding fines has even increased by a quarter, mainly due to the increasing number of speed traps. For example, there are currently 251 route checks in our country, and a further 43 route checks will be added in Flanders.

In most cases, it concerns speeding offenses of less than 10 to 20 kilometers per hour too fast. Nevertheless, 35,052 fines were issued to real speed drivers. “We see that the group that drives more than 40 kilometers per hour too fast is also increasing every year. That is a phenomenon that we have to tackle, because it concerns traffic criminals who probably also do not care much about other traffic rules,” said the Touring spokesperson.
