A record number of national energy infrastructure projects started this year. These projects are indispensable to meet the expected growing demand for energy and to switch to more sustainable energy from home soil, so that the Netherlands becomes less dependent on foreign countries. It appears today overview of all major energy infrastructure projects that are now being implemented in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is switching to more sustainable energy. This will make us less dependent on fossil energy from abroad and ensure that – now and in the future – companies and homes are supplied with sufficient energy. To achieve this, a lot of new energy infrastructure will be built in the coming years, from extensions of the electricity grid to pipelines for hydrogen, among other things. The national government ensures rapid and careful preparation of projects so that grid operators can start construction as quickly as possible.
Realizing large-scale energy projects is complex, partly due to the scarce space for large energy projects, limited nitrogen space and scarcity of personnel and materials. The national government is working with grid operators and other authorities to keep up the pace. The government introduced an acceleration package in 2025 to accelerate the expansion of the power grid by shortening procedures, additional area investments and support for local authorities. In addition, the government is working with TenneT to significantly accelerate the 26 most urgent projects to expand the high-voltage grid. The new approach has started with the first projects.
Milestones in 2025
- The new high-voltage connection between Borssele and Rilland is ready and put into use.
- The high-voltage connection between Maasbracht and Eindhoven has been strengthened.
- The location study for the construction of 2 new nuclear power stations has started, and a provisional location decision is expected to be made in the summer of 2026.
- The route to bring wind energy from the future Doordewind offshore wind farm to land has been chosen
13 new projects started with location selection
This year, site surveys have started for a record number of 13 national projects. Including for the expansion of the high-voltage grid at Amsterdam-Zuidoost and Wijchen. In addition, 3 projects for the construction of the national hydrogen network have been started. This means that almost all parts of the hydrogen network are now in preparation.
8 new projects of national importance
With the Multi-Year Infrastructure Energy and Climate Program (MIEK), the government determines which major projects of national importance receive extra support. By prioritizing during implementation or accelerating the execution of required studies. In 2025, 8 new projects were added to the program. For example, research into the rollout of a regional hydrogen network and where additional cables and pipes are needed if aircraft run on electricity or hydrogen in the future.
