This year, nearly 1900 extras joined, a record. For many people from Bruges it remains the most beautiful day of the year. “It is the third time that our son has been on. A tradition in the making,” says Gabriëla Kowalska.

The Holy Blood Procession has lured 40,000 spectators to the center of Bruges. Foreign visitors also remain faithful. “I was ten when I came for the first time. Now I am 64,” says Marie-Josphe from Lens in France. “My mother and grandmother organized buses to Bruges.”

Hard work is being done behind the scenes. Director Dominique Deckers: “Extrations really play scenes, it is more than walking.” Wig maker Sharon Delaere provided around 800 wigs and 200 beards.

Modern accessories are out of the question. Everything has to beat historically – to hiding tattoos. A final photo in costume is a permanent reminder of this unique Bruges tradition.
