Statistics complete at TM
Marek Hamsik has announced his retirement from the Slovak national team. The 34-year-old midfielder wrote in a Facebook post on Monday: “It wasn’t easy, I thought about it for a long time, but after 15 years I’ve decided to complete a significant and glorious part of my football career.” Hamsik says he is ” very proud” and “downright touched” that he was able to be part of all of the greatest successes of the Slovakian national team. The entire national team history of Slovakia, in which Hamsik plays a significant role as a double record holder, is available in the Transfermarkt database.
He named participation in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the European Championships in 2016 and 2021 as the most important of his country’s successes. “It was a great honor for me to lead the Slovakian national team as captain in more than 50 games,” he summed up . And thanked all the coaches, teammates and supervisors with whom he worked.
National coach Stefan Tarkovic commented on Hamsik’s decision with the words: “With this announcement, the era of (Martin) Skrtel and Hamsik has come to an end, a new era for the national team begins.” game in the Slovakian league ended his professional career, Hamsik is still active at the Turkish club Trabzonspor.
Hamsik played 135 times for the Slovak national team from 2007 and scored 26 goals, both of which are Slovak records. Former Liverpool defender Skrtel has also played more than a hundred times for the national team.
