In the trade dispute between the USA and China, US President Donald Trump is aiming for a deal at the planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.
“I think when we finish our talks in South Korea, China and I will have a really fair and really great trade agreement,” the White House Republican said.
Trump and Xi want to meet on the sidelines of the APEC economic summit, which takes place at the end of October. An exact date is not yet publicly known.
At the same time, Trump emphasized that if no agreement was reached, additional tariffs of 100 percent on imports from China would be introduced on November 1st.
It recently became unclear whether the meeting would even take place. The fronts had hardened. Trump was angry that China had announced export restrictions on rare earths and other materials in a letter to several countries. The USA then brought additional tariffs of 100 percent into play on imports of Chinese products.
Beijing then accused the USA of “double standards” and threatened countermeasures. Recently, Trump’s words towards China have become milder again.
