Real Madrid wins Supercopa thriller against Atlético

Antonio Rüdiger scored at the front, Antonio Rüdiger scored at the back: After a curious brace from the German national defender, Spain’s record champions Real Madrid reached the final of the national Super Cup.

At the tournament in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Real defeated city rivals Atletico Madrid in a wild game 5:3 (3:3, 1:1) after extra time.

The final opponent on Sunday is the winner of the second semi-final between FC Barcelona around Ilkay Gündogan and CA Osasuna, who face each other on Thursday.

Rüdiger, who had already scored in the league win against RCD Mallorca the previous week, scored to make it 1-1 for Real in the 20th minute. His own goal in the 78th minute gave Atletico a 3-2 lead, but ex-Leverkusen player Daniel Carvajal (85th) saved Real in extra time.

There, another own goal made it 4-3 – Stefan Savic scored in the 116th minute to the detriment of Atletico, in which Frenchman Antoine Griezmann became the sole club record scorer with his 174th competitive goal.

Before the game, the late football emperor Franz Beckenbauer was remembered with a minute’s silence.
