Real Madrid has taken over the top position in the Spanish league from Girona thanks to a narrow victory at Deportivo Alavés (0-1). Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s star team attacked low-ranked Alavés for ninety minutes in Vitoria-Gasteiz, but still managed to score in injury time. Lucas Vázquez headed home from a corner.
With the win, Real, like Girona, which drew 1-1 at Real Betis for the entire match with Daley Blind on the field, reached 45 points. However, the Madrilenians have a better goal difference and are therefore at the top.
Real played most of the second half with one man less. Captain Nacho received a red card for a foul in the 54th minute after VAR intervention. With ten men, Real hardly had any problems defensively, but it was also disappointing offensively. Only Brahim Díaz and Rodrygo scored a goal. A draw seemed to be in the making, until Toni Kroos put the ball on Vázquez’s head from a corner kick in the 92nd minute.
