Real Madrid Spanish champions for the 35th time

Clear victory against Espanyol

Real Madrid are back on Spain’s football throne after a year’s hiatus. With a brilliant 4-0 win over Espanyol Barcelona in front of a home crowd on Saturday evening, the record champions completed the 35th title that had emerged in recent weeks. This time, however, Karim Benzema, who has been in gala form for months, did not score the goals alone, but the Brazilian Rodrygo with a brace (33./43.) and Marco Asensio (55.). In the 81st minute Benzema was able to celebrate his 26th goal of the season in the Spanish top flight. The top scorer’s crown is practically impossible to take away from him.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti thus completed his collection of titles in the five major European leagues. After championships in Italy with AC Milan, England with Chelsea, France with Paris Saint-Germain and Germany with Bayern Munich, the 62-year-old has now also won Spain’s league. Nobody had done that before the Italian. During his first tenure at Real Madrid from 2013 to 2015, Ancelotti was still denied the championship title.

The next goal for Real is to win the Champions League again. After the 3: 4 in the semi-final first leg at Manchester City, the record winner wants to make it into the final in the second leg on Wednesday (9 p.m. / DAZN). Ancelotti had already described the championship title as an additional motivation. “If we manage to win the title on Saturday, we will of course celebrate,” said the Italian. “I think that would help us for the game against Manchester City.”
