Real Madrid still has a coach in Álvaro Arbeloa, but it is clear that the ex-player cannot continue. Now José Mourinho speaks about return rumors.
José Mourinho has spoken out about a possible return to Real Madrid. At a press conference, the current coach of Benfica Lisbon said clearly: “No one from Real Madrid has spoken to me, I can guarantee that.”
The 63-year-old Portuguese then added: “I can’t say anything else about it. I’ve already told your colleague that there’s nothing regarding Real Madrid, and the situation regarding Benfica is already known. My contract with Benfica runs for another year and that’s all.”
Rumors keep coming up that Real President Florentino Pérez in particular is interested in bringing Mourinho back. Mourinho coached Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, during which time he won the championship and the Spanish Cup with the Royals.
In addition to Mourinho, there are also other potential candidates for the coaching job in the summer around Real Madrid. Among others, Zinédine Zidane is being traded, who could then take over the office for the third time. Other names include Didier Deschamps, Mauricio Pochettino, Jürgen Klopp and Massimiliano Allegri.
It is unlikely that Arbeloa will continue. The Spaniard took over from predecessor Xabi Alonso in January. Since then, Madrid has been knocked out of the cup against a third division team, the championship has virtually been lost and the Whites were eliminated from Bayern in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
