Best points average in “Royal”
Carlo Ancelotti has already worked for ten different clubs in his long, successful coaching career – his second station with the “Royal” will probably be his last. “After this phase at Real Madrid, I will probably retire,” the 62-year-old said in an interview with Prime Video (quoted via “mark“) and then pushed: “But if Real wants me to stay here for another ten years, then I’ll stay here for another ten years.”
The Italian has been back with the Madrilenians since this season, after having coached them in 119 games from 2013 to 2015 and winning “La Decima” – their tenth title in the Champions League – with them, among other things. Last weekend he reached another milestone: Ancelotti was the first coach ever to complete his collection of titles in the five major European leagues. After championships in Italy with AC Milan, in England with Chelsea FC, in France with Paris Saint-Germain and in Germany with FC Bayern Munich, he has now also won Spain’s league. During his first tenure at Real, Ancelotti was denied the championship title.
Coaches with the most different championship titles in the top 5 leagues
Ancelotti and the “Royal” – that fits. During his first term in Madrid he averaged 2.36 points, currently it is 2.28. He only came close to these values as Bayern Munich’s head coach (2.28). Ancelotti admitted that despite more than 20 years in charge he has seldom been happier and that President Florentino Pérez’s second call was one of the finest moments of his career.
Champions League: Real Madrid confident ahead of second leg against Manchester City
On Wednesday, Ancelotti and his team will fight for a place in the final of the “premier class”. The first leg at Manchester City ended 3:4. Nevertheless, there is great confidence in the club. “We have a lot of self-confidence,” he assured on Tuesday – and midfield veteran Luka Modric followed suit. The mood was “very good,” said Ancelotti. Modric explained why this is: “We didn’t play our best game in the first leg and we still scored three goals. We have to do better tomorrow and we will do it.”
When asked if City coach Pep Guardiola’s good results at the Santiago Bernabéu (six wins and one loss in a total of nine guest appearances) will play a role, Ancelotti said: “No, not at all, every game has its own story.” The “Royal” expect “certainly a difficult match”. “But my players are in good spirits. They’re very motivated, very focused,” said the coach, whose team secured their 35th LaLiga title on Saturday.
