The Real Madrid captain had forced the penalty himself with a shot that was deflected with his arm by defender Yeray Álvarez.
In the 89th minute, Raúl Garcia was also allowed to take a penalty on behalf of Athletic Club, after a handball by Eder Militao, who had to leave the field with a red card. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois cleverly saved Garcia’s penalty with his foot after which the final was played.
Defender Dani Carvajal was missing from Real Madrid. He tested positive for the corona virus two days before the final. Carvajal had a base place at Real on Wednesday as a right back in the semi-final against FC Barcelona. Ancelotti’s team won the Clásico 3-2 after extra time. Athletic from Bilbao defeated national champions Atlético Madrid 2-1 on Thursday.
