Real Betis Sevilla wins Copa del Rey – Strong nerves in penalty thriller against FC Valencia

For the 3rd time after 1977 and 2005

Real Betis Sevilla has conquered the Spanish Football Cup for the third time after 1977 and 2005. In the final of the Copa del Rey, coach Manuel Pellegrini’s team beat FC Valencia 5-4 on penalties on Sunday night.

After 90 minutes and extra time, it was 1-1 (1-1) in front of a good 53,000 spectators in the Estadio de La Cartuja. Borja Iglesias put Betis ahead in the 11th minute, Hugo Duro equalized before the break (30th). 19-year-old Yunus Musah missed Valencia’s fourth penalty, but former Schalke loanee Juan Miranda then coldly converted Betis’ crucial fifth try. Record cup winners FC Barcelona had already been eliminated in the round of 16.
