Stay active

Van Dyke strives to exercise every day. He goes to the gym three times a week. At the gym, Van Dyke trains according to the fitness circuit and moves from one machine to another. Sometimes he dances as he moves to the next device.

Stay playful

Van Dyke advises to stay playful and stay in touch with your inner child.

According to Van Dyke, playfulness gives fun to life and at the same time a sense of freedom. He’s always looking for an opportunity for a playful moment, whether it’s cracking a joke or making a toddler laugh in the checkout line.

The actor also recommends pets and everyday singing – or even humming.

Say yes

One of Van Dyke’s tips is to say yes as much as possible. According to him, openness to new experiences is good for the brain and the mind in general.

When a local theater asked Van Dyke to direct elementary school children, he agreed. When Colplay asked Van Dyke last year to dance barefoot and nimbly All My Love – with the song’s music video, he agreed to that too.

The consent also helps Van Dyke to remain present in the present and the future, and not to dwell on the past. Van Dyke also urges an open mind and staying open to change.

Maintain networks

According to Van Dyke, maintaining social relationships helps to age well.

Van Dyke puts effort and time into maintaining his social network. He keeps inviting his offspring over and wants his backyard to resemble a theme park for children. Van Dyke says that he gets a lot of strength from the children’s joy and screams.

Van Dyke also has friends much younger than himself who keep him young. He has only one friend his own age, which is director Mel Brooks, 99. Van Dyke humorously states that he is currently looking for friends his own age.
