The basement duel on Sunday offered the viewer a lot of spectacle. St. Pauli also turned up in Leipzig at the beginning – but in the end the hosts won clearly.
On Sunday afternoon, Kiel and Bochum already had a spectacular basement duel in the Bundesliga (more about the game can be read here). In the evening, RB Leipzig and St. Pauli met. The Saxons prevailed and won the game against the Kiezkicker 2-0.
Due to the victory, the team of coach Marco Rose jumped to fourth place and has replaced VfB Stuttgart to fifth place. The Saxons now lead with one point ahead of the Swabians.
After less than five minutes, the guests from Hamburg had the first chance. After a free kick, Leipzig’s keeper Péter Gulácsi was on hand. However, it did not clarify optimally. So the Kiezkicker came to the margin by Jackson Irvine. However, the shot was blocked and the Leipziger could then clarify.
After a good quarter of an hour a short shock moment for the Leipzig. Because: Defender Castello Lukeba wants to clarify a shot from St. Pauli. However, he does not hit the ball properly, so that this direction rolls towards Toreck. In the last second, Gulácsi can still steer the ball away. Then the cheering moment. Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško showed his technical class. The striker hit the right lower corner and gave the hosts 1-0 (16th).
St. Pauli tried afterwards, but there were more opportunities for the hosts. In the 35th minute with again success and again the individual quality of the Leipzig became clear. After a long ball by Willi Orban on Šeško, the scorer searched for 1-0 XAVI Simons. The midfielder increased to 2-0-much to the delight of RB coach Marco Rose. In return, St. Pauli coach Alexander Blessin visibly changed.
But the guests did not give up and kept trying it. So also in the 61st minute, when Irvine kept a great overview and played on Elias Saad. The wing racer lurked and had a good chance, but his shot was just blocked by Nicola’s Seiwal.
It became exciting about twenty minutes before the end when Leipzig’s Willi Orban saw the red card from referee Florian Badstübner after an emergency brake on Saad. The veteran had to get off the pitch, the video referee did not report.
Shortly before the end, St. Pauli turned up again. Irvine also had a good chance as Hauke Wahl. Péter Gulácsi was both time. It remained in the 2-0 win for the host.
