RB Leipzig wants to convince Christopher Nkunku with massive investments

Halstenberg & Kampl ahead of extra time

“I’ve said it before. And I’ll say it again here on ARD: Christopher Nkunku will be our player again next season,” emphasized RB Leipzig’s managing director Oliver Mintzlaff recently on the sidelines of the semi-final game in the DFB Cup against Union Berlin (2-1). Nevertheless, the rumors about the departure of by far the best midfield scorer in 2021/22 from the top 15 leagues persist, while the “Red Bulls” try to keep their rising star.

As the “L’Equipereported, Nkunku believes he can only develop further if he leaves RB Leipzig in the summer. He made no secret of the fact that he would most likely be drawn somewhere else, especially to his teammates. The 24-year-old wants to play at the absolute top level. The challenge for his advisor Pini Zahavi, who also advises Robert Lewandowski (33) and David Alaba (29), among others, is now to open the door for negotiations. Also after “Image” information Nkunku wants to take the next step in the summer.

RB Leipzig promptly rejected rumors that Nkunku had already approached the club with a request to change on the sidelines of the Europa League game at Glasgow Rangers on Thursday. Nkunku’s advisor Zahavi was in Leipzig last weekend. However, the topic is more about an early extension of the contract, which is valid until 2024.

RB Leipzig want to convince Nkunku with extension and investments

In order to convince him, according to “L’Équipe”, RB Leipzig wants to make Nkunku the symbol of an ambitious project to get rid of the stamp as a “springboard club” and underline the ambitions for the championship title. RB want to invest heavily in the team in the summer and build a team around key player Nkunku. The envisaged contract extension should bring the Frenchman a large salary increase, and an exit clause is also an issue. According to “Bild”, Nkunku should sign for another year, with 8 million euros he would then earn almost three times as much (previously 3 million euros). An exit clause for 2023 is to be set at 65 million euros.

As a sign of determination, according to the “L’Équipe” report, RB Leipzig should not even contact potential buyers, and the club also spread the idea among the sporting directors that even an offer of 100 million euros would not convince them. There has not been a concrete offer so far, but according to “Bild”, the RB managers would, contrary to their statements, start pondering beyond the 75 million euros. Mintzlaff also emphasized that “in principle nothing in football is not for sale”.

The French newspaper names a number of clubs from the top 5 leagues as fundamentally interested parties: Manchester City, Chelsea FC, AC Milan, Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona and FC Bayern. However, nothing is concrete yet, as the efforts would depend on other factors such as club takeovers, financial possibilities or further transfers. The talks between the players and RB Leipzig should continue, but the goal is still a change in the summer.

In addition to Nkunku: RB Leipzig before extra time with Halstenberg and Kampl

Only a formality, however, is the whereabouts of two long-time Leipzigers. According to “dpa” information, national player Marcel Halstenberg (30) and playmaker Kevin Kampl (31) will extend their contracts with the Saxons. RB is also trying to get a new working paper with Konrad Laimer (24), whose contract expires in summer 2023. If the Austrian national player rejects the offer, he would have to be sold in the summer if Leipzig still wants to generate a fee. In addition to Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern, several Premier League clubs are said to be interested in Laimer (overview).
