Leipzig turns East duel after early shock and pyrotechnics

After conceding an early goal, Leipzig still moves into the next round of the cup. However, the mood is dampened.
Bundesliga club RB Leipzig fulfilled their duty confidently and reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. In the eastern derby against bottom of the second division 1. FC Magdeburg, coach Ole Werner’s team won 3-1 (2-1). Silas Gnaka gave the guests the lead with a penalty kick (11th minute), but Antonio Nusa (19th) and Christoph Baumgartner (29th/54th) turned the game in Leipzig’s favor.
The mood in the Leipzig Arena was clouded by a medical emergency: a Magdeburg fan had to be resuscitated in the stadium circuit before kick-off and was taken to hospital. In the 60th minute, RB Leipzig announced on X that the fan had died there. Read more about this here.
Magdeburg set the first tone and forced RB keeper Maarten Vandevoordt to make two strong saves early on. After a push by Willi Orban and a foul by Lukas Klostermann against Falko Michel, referee Felix Zwayer awarded a penalty – Gnaka safely converted. Leipzig responded promptly: Nusa equalized from distance, and just a little later Baumgartner took the lead after an assist from Conrad Harder.
Magdeburg remained dangerous and repeatedly had good scenes in the RB penalty area. After the break, however, Leipzig clearly took control and rewarded themselves with Baumgartner’s second goal after several missed chances. Magdeburg started another final offensive, but was not rewarded with a second goal.
