RB Leipzig: Timo Werner injured

National striker Timo Werner suffered what was probably a minor ankle injury just three weeks before the World Cup in Qatar (20 November to 18 December).

The 26-year-old from cup winners RB Leipzig had to be substituted in the last group game of the Champions League on Wednesday against Shakhtar Donetsk in Warsaw after a foul in the 19th minute of the game.

The Saxons gave the all-clear during the game. Werner only had pain after the first diagnosis, but more detailed examinations would follow in Leipzig, it said.

“Hopefully it’s not that bad for Timo. But it just couldn’t be done anymore. He was in pain when he stepped on it. We have to examine it more closely now. But the doc says it doesn’t seem to be anything wild for now,” said coach Marco Rose after the game.

On November 10th, national coach Hansi Flick will nominate his World Cup squad. Werner has been part of the German squad since March 2017, and the attacker is a permanent fixture for Qatar.
