Chelsea lost the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals 1-0 at Middlesbrough. Hayden Hackney scored the goal in the first half on behalf of the middle team from the Championship, the second level of England.
At Middlesbrough, Dutch defender Rav van den Berg played the entire match. Compatriot Alex Bangura dropped out after 20 minutes. Ian Maatsen was absent at Chelsea. According to media reports, he is on his way to Borussia Dortmund, which would like to rent him.
The return is on Tuesday, January 23, in London. The League Cup and FA Cup are the only trophies Chelsea are chasing this season. The fallen top club is again experiencing a poor season in terms of sport and is tenth in the Premier League.
The other semi-final is between Liverpool and Fulham. They play their first game in Liverpool on Wednesday.
