Rattazzi on Alberto Fernández: “I’m afraid of what I can do until the elections”

The former president of Fiat Argentina, Cristiano Rattazzi, opined that the Argentine economy “is a swap” and in addition to criticizing the president Alberto Fernandezof whom he said that he is “a pathetic character”, made a harsh prediction: “the good thing is that it ends before the end of the year”, Rattazzi shot in an interview with La Nación Más.

In addition, the Italian-Argentine businessman questioned the lack of clear rules in the economy and was especially incisive about Alberto Fernández’s statements on inflation: the president had said, in an interview with the Argentine media “Folha de Sao Paulo” that “a large part of inflation is self-constructed, it is in people’s heads; people see in the newspaper that the fuel is going to go up and then it starts to increase just in case”.

Ratazzi laughed it off: “How am I not going to laugh?”, he reacted. On the inflationary issue, he elaborated saying that “it is a serious problem because it affects people with fewer resources, it is the most unfair tax.” He also pointed out that the government has a “populist orientation without money” and that this is “very complicated”. “It showed tremendously. They don’t know how to make cash ”and even she issued an alert:“ I’m afraid of what I can do until the elections ”.

In addition to calling for “a stable currency”, less fiscal deficit and an economic opening, Rattazzi questioned the government’s “anti-export bias”, and pointed out that the only alternative to solve the serious economic imbalances is a “competitive, open and full of private industry because it is the one that creates value”. “The State does not create value, rather it absorbs it,” he stated.

In 2020, when Fernández’s term had just begun, Rattazzi had had better expectations. He not only launched harsh criticism against the government of Mauricio Macri, but also praised Fernández, stating that he “did not like other people’s money”, and the then Minister of Economy Martin Guzmanhighlighting his conviction that “you cannot live like Argentina has been doing for 70 years: with a continuous fiscal deficit and only 5 years of fiscal surplus” and considered that Guzmán had the will to “control inflation”, a problem that later it ended up getting worse.
