Ralf Rangnick wants cup reform in England

Ralf Rangnick is in favor of changes in the English cup competitions in order to straighten out the overcrowded game plan in the motherland of football.

The League Cup must be put up for discussion, even if it improves the financial situation of the third and fourth division, said the interim team manager of record champions Manchester United.

Rangnick also pleaded on Friday for the repetition of the FA Cup to be abolished. “That would be a good idea. In other countries, cup competitions have extra time and penalty shootouts,” said the 63-year-old.

Rangnick does not want to question the tradition of games between Christmas and New Year’s Eve in the Premier League: “We should stick to that and respect it.” Manchester United will play at Newcastle United on December 27 and against Burnley FC on December 30 – should the corona pandemic allow it.

Liverpool’s team manager Jürgen Klopp has long criticized the tight schedule and the lack of a winter break on the island. “I have not only worried about the well-being of the players since this year,” he said on Wednesday evening, “I’ve been talking about it for six years or more.” He couldn’t see changes.

In England, due to the pandemic-related game cancellations, the discussion about the schedule is heating up. In the past two weeks, 13 games have been canceled. Catch-up dates are difficult to find in the tight schedule with two cup competitions.
