Rainy season: Africa Cup 2023 postponed – risk of deluge “not good for African football”

Only from January 2024

The next Africa Cup of Nations will not take place in 2023 as originally planned. Due to concerns about the climatic conditions, Africa’s most important football tournament will not be played in Ivory Coast until January and February 2024. This was confirmed by CAF President Patrice Motsepe at a press conference on Sunday.

Actually, the cup should be held from June 23rd to July 23rd, 2023. At that time it is the rainy season in Ivory Coast. “We don’t want to take the risk of holding a tournament in a deluge. It would not be good for African football and its image,” Motsepe said. For this reason, the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon had already been postponed.
