Florentien van der Meulen, newsreader on Radio 538, thinks Albert Heijn’s plastic bags are too expensive – 70 cents – and therefore steals them every now and then. “Then I will crease it first.”
Radio 538’s new morning show is now and then one big grumbler. Tim Klijn, sidekicks Niels van Baarlen and Rick Romijn and newsreader Florentien van der Meulen are especially angry about the increased prices. “If you fill up in Austria… There you just throw in another liter of petrol for 1.75 euros. Here for 2 euros plus”, Niels snorts now.
Chocolate paste
And chocolate spread? Also much more expensive in the Netherlands, Niels growls. “We were talking about those Jumbo receipts, right? Last week, an investigation was conducted in the Netherlands and Belgium by Omroep Brabant. You pay 5 euros for a pot of pasta here and 2 euros as much in Belgium. They help themselves to the shit.”
It’s all not normal anymore, he continues. “I went for a swim in an outdoor pool. Two children and an adult: 19 euros.”
Rick: “It’s crazy, it’s really crazy. It’s not normal anymore.”
Plastic bags
Florentien also finds it all impossible to do. “To finish the lamentation: I was at Albert Heijn yesterday and I grabbed one of those plastic bags, because I had forgotten to bring a bag. And 70 cents!”
Niels: “Yes, I just find that stupid.”
Florentien: “I thought: am I going to do it or am I going to steal it?”
Niels: “Did you steal it again?”
Bad example
Florentien: “No, I did pay for it, but I think: next time, then ehh…”
Rick: “Did you steal it? What a bad example.”
Niels: “That’s not possible, is it?”
Florentien: “Yes, then I will crease it as if I used it.”
Niels: “Oh, that’s a tactic?”
Florentien: “Yes, of course. Do not you know that?”

Rick can’t believe his ears: “I think that’s anti-social. I really mean that.”
Niels: “I really think so ehhh…”
Florentien: “Yes, it is a bit aso, but I do it every now and then.”
Niels: “You earn tons of money man!”
Rick: “You earn a lot here.”
Niels: “That 70 cents can be removed, can’t they?”
Florentien: “Don’t whine. I will continue.”
Niels: “Weird.”
Florentien’s statements are emphatically not meant to be joking. So she’s serious. Incidentally, sidekick Rick was recently ‘arrested’ at Albert Heijn because he had ‘forgotten’ to scan a number of articles.
