There was another accident on the R8 on Wednesday. No fatality, thankfully. But with two grandparents and a grandchild as involved. The mayor of Kuurne, Francis Benoit, has had enough. Not that he accuses Minister Peeters of anything. But there’s no point in lingering anymore, the R8 needs to be tackled. “
Dear minister. You bear no debt and in those almost 50 years you are the umpteenth Flemish minister of mobility. You registered yet another study on transitions for 2022.”
“Many useless bridges over the Leie”
The intersection of Brugsesteenweg with the R8 has now been made safer. But the entire ring road around Kortrijk requires a structural approach. And that requires Flemish money. “More useless bridges have been paid for and realized on the Leie in recent times than sections of R8 that have been causing traffic casualties for almost 50 years. Deep sigh . King cycles over the Leie I applaud the cyclists. But those same cyclists apparently have to stay within the boundaries of the R8. Same with other traffic. Because the daily risk of an accident is still there on the R8.”
“How long do we have to wait”
“How long do we have to wait?” Benoit continues. “It’s not just about our municipality. The neighbors from Kortrijk and Harelbeke will also benefit from it. But finally realize the missing links that can already be done. Please free up a budget for 2023-2024. You can come with bells and whistles to open.”
