Federal prosecutors in Chicago last Thursday (February 16) requested an additional 25 years in prison for R. Kelly. He is currently serving a 30-year sentence. If the responsible judge approves the new sentence, the 56-year-old would be in prison until he is about 100 years old.
“The only way to ensure Kelly doesn’t reoffend is for a sentence that will keep him in prison for the rest of his life,” reads the 37-page page Application out. The sentence is 25 years higher than actually provided for in the law, “continued conviction is extremely important due to Kelly’s outrageous crime,” it says. “Kelly’s sexual abuse of a minor was premeditated and complete.”
Meanwhile, his lawyer referred to a statistic according to which the average life expectancy of prison inmates was 64 years. “Kelly would have to defy all statistics and odds to ever get out of prison alive,” she said of his previous sentence.
In 2022, a jury found the former musician guilty of multiple child abuse. R. Kelly was arrested in Chicago in 2019, but the trial and sentencing took place in New York. In Chicago, too, there were indictments for sexual abuse of minors, sexual exploitation and the production of child pornography.
