Goal celebration Matthias Musche Magdeburg, 6, Omar Ingi Magnusson Magdeburg, 14, Tim Hornke Magdeburg

As of: April 29, 2026 • 9:16 p.m

Defending champion Magdeburg has gained an excellent starting position in Hungary in the race for the final tournament in Cologne. In Szeged, the people from the Elbe city clearly prevailed in the end after some problems.

With an impressive 35:28 (15:14) at Pick Szeged, SC Magdeburg has achieved a brilliant starting position for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. Gísli Kristjánsson and Albin Lagergren were the Elbestadt team’s top scorers with seven goals each.

A game at eye level for one half

The defending champions got off to a strong start and were already leading by five goals after a quarter of an hour (16th/10:5). The Bundesliga table leaders then lost track and allowed Szeged back into the game. By the time the half-time siren sounded, the Hungarians were within one goal.

After the break, Bennet Wiegert’s team turned up the heat and continued to extend their lead with several strong runs (48th/28:22). Even in the heated phase in the middle of the second half, when the toughness and intensity on the floor increased, Magdeburg remained cool, confidently played down their game in the style of a top team and consistently exploited the ever-growing gaps in the Hungarian defense. At the latest with 30:24 (51st), the course was set for an away win, and Szeged failed to rebel. The second leg in the Getec Arena will take place on Thursday, May 7th at 6:45 p.m.
