In the afternoon plenary session of the House, the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be debated. PVDA MP Nabil Boukili condemned the military intervention, but then also pointed to the role of the United States and NATO in the crisis. The US has withdrawn from several international treaties in recent decades, he said, and “NATO’s gradual parallel installation of missile defense systems in Europe, from Romania to Poland, aims to break the security balance built up during the Cold War”.

Boukili immediately got the whole Chamber over him. The government members present also responded. “Disgusting,” said Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. “We can say that Putin has allies in this parliament. At a time like this, I think that’s extremely inappropriate. NATO has never been a threat.”

Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès accused Boukili of collaborating with Russian propaganda. “Your party may like that, but I’m ashamed for you.”
