Militants trained abroad were involved in the riots in Kazakhstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during an online summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Broadcast led RBC.

“Well-organized and well-controlled groups of militants were used, <...> apparently trained in terrorist camps abroad,” Putin said.

He described what happened in Kazakhstan as “the aggression of international terrorism”, noting that the CSTO quickly decided to send peacekeepers to the republic to stabilize the situation.

At the online summit of the CSTO, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also called the attack on the country a “terrorist attack”, the main purpose of which, he said, was “to undermine the constitutional order.” Talking about the events in Alma-Ata, Tokayev said, “armed militants rushed into the city from three directions, like a huge flock of hyenas.” What happened in the city, according to the president, will go down in history as the “Alma-Ata tragedy”.
