Puppy that had been missing in Paris for a week suddenly turns up in front of the king’s palace: ‘Great mystery’ | Abroad

A young puppy that went missing in Paris a week ago was found in The Hague on Thursday afternoon. Roxy, as the dog is called, walked anxiously across the road in front of Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague. Passers-by called the animal ambulance. John Buijs rushed to the scene and took care of the animal. “It’s still a big mystery.”

Buijs knows all too well that the animal ambulance can receive surprising reports from one moment to the next. When he checked the missing puppy on his chip, he was quite surprised. “Roxy was very lucky.”

The puppy was walking on the Bezuidenhoutseweg in The Hague. The dog was ‘in panic’, says Buijs. “Two ladies walking by noticed Roxy and immediately called us.” Buijs happened to be around the corner with the animal ambulance and went straight to the location. “The dog was scared and very lively. When checked, she did have a chip, but it was not registered.”

‘All the way in France’

Buijs called the control room. According to him, they had to ‘do a little more work’ to find out the origin of the dog. “Eventually the serial number was checked and they ended up all the way in France. The animal turned out to come from an animal welfare organization in Paris.”

When the animal ambulance contacted them, the owner also spoke very little English. Communication only turned out to be possible in Arabic. But it just so happens that the animal ambulance has someone in the house who speaks that. “My colleague translated everything and then we found out that the puppy had been missing for a week.”

The animal was probably taken or traveled with, but walking seems like a long way to me

It is not yet known how Roxy ultimately ended up in The Hague. “The animal was probably taken or traveled with me, walking seems like a long way to me.” Buijs suspects that Roxy is not yet a year old. “There was a lot of emotion involved. We are now still discussing how we can get her back to Paris.”

Buijs looks back on a ‘bizarre’ discovery. “Really unbelievable, this doesn’t exist,” he says on the phone, still full of adrenaline. “This feels so fantastic, it makes you see again how important our work is. The animal was panicking, in a strange environment, on a busy road. The owner also sounded desperate, so it would be wonderful to bring them back together. These are really the best things about our work,” said the animal ambulance employee.
