Punkt MC03: A Google-Free Smartphone without a Subscription Model
The Punkt. MC03, unveiled by the Swiss company at CES 2026, is now available for purchase. This smartphone stands out as it operates without Google services and boasts a replaceable battery. Initially offered at a price of 700 euros with a subscription fee for its operating system, AphyOS, the model has evolved. Interestingly, while the subscription costs have been removed, the device’s price has increased, raising eyebrows among potential buyers.
Subscription Model Removed
Initially, the selling price of 699 euros included a 12-month usage fee for AphyOS, developed by Apostrophy. After this period, users would have needed to subscribe to continue utilizing the OS, with monthly fees set at 9.99 euros. For a bundled option, users could have opted for a 3-year commitment at 129 euros or a 5-year plan for 199 euros. However, Punkt. has pivoted away from this model.
Now, the company has adjusted the one-time purchase price to 745 euros. According to Punkt.’s product page, this price eliminates ongoing subscription fees and offers a complete functionality package upfront.
Features of the MC03 and AphyOS
Positioned as a true technological alternative to major tech companies, the MC03 runs on AphyOS, which is currently based on Android 15 (Android Open Source Project, AOSP). It promises enhanced data sovereignty and security features that filter out tracking technologies, bloatware, hidden apps, and cumbersome background services. Additionally, it aims to thwart spying attempts and incorporates hardened code to counteract potential attacks, supported by a bank-level Secure Element.
In terms of longevity, Punkt. assures users of 5 years of security updates and 3 years of function updates, allowing access to new Android versions as they roll out.
Hardware Specifications
The MC03 bears remarkable resemblance to the Gigaset GS6 Pro, a smartphone priced around 450 euros, which is situated in the mid-range category. The MC03 features a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, echoing capabilities found in more affordable devices, such as the CMF Phone 2 Pro at 250 euros. The device is equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of flash storage, with the option to expand memory via a MicroSD card—an increasingly rare feature in modern smartphones.
Its OLED display spans 6.67 inches with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The replaceable battery is rated at 5200 mAh, capable of fast charging via a 30W wired connection and 15W wireless charging. Weighing in at 240 grams, the device is also IP68-rated, providing robust protection against dust and water ingress.
Camera Specifications
The camera setup includes a 64 MP wide-angle lens with phase detection autofocus (PDAF), an 8 MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2 MP macro camera. Selfie enthusiasts will appreciate the 32 MP front-facing camera, offering solid performance for video calls and photographs alike.
Similar to the MC03, the Gigaset GS6 Pro also ships with Android 15 but offers Google Services. Gigaset commits to providing Android updates for versions 16 and 17, promising 7 years of security patches—one fewer Android update but two more years of security support compared to Punkt.’s offering.
In summary, the Punkt. MC03 presents a unique proposition in a saturated smartphone market, particularly appealing to users seeking a device free of Google integration. Despite its higher price point, the advantages of enhanced privacy and security may make it an attractive option for those who prioritize these features.
