Sportswear company Puma and sanitary underwear label Modibodi have collaborated. The resulting collection includes menstrual underwear and activewear, the companies announced on Tuesday.

The collection aims to offer women the opportunity to remain active at all times of their cycle while using products that are more environmentally friendly than conventional hygiene products. Modibodi’s technological know-how is used for the items in the collection – the underwear consists of a top layer made of merino wool, a microfibre middle layer and a waterproof bottom layer. This is to make the items moisture-wicking, absorbent and safe.

“No woman should have to stand on the edge of life because she has her period or her bladder is leaking,” said Kristy Chong, CEO and Founder of Modibodi. “We are so excited to launch this collection with Puma and together normalize menstruation and fight stigma.”

According to Puma, studies have shown that girls’ participation in sports falls from 69 percent at 11 and 12 year olds to 45 percent at 13 and 15 year olds. Menstrual underwear can also reduce the problem of the environmental impact of single-use products, says Erin Longin, Puma’s global director for running and training.

Puma and Modibodi have also worked with Women Win, a charity, as part of the collaboration. Five of the newly created panties are to be given to 500 needy girls and women.
