Publisher Hubert Burda looks back at his roots for his 85th birthday.
“I am grateful that my parents’ works of life were once entrusted to me as a deposit,” it said in a statement. “The fact that it has been successful over the decades to do justice to this trust and to increase this deposit is the great merit of all employees in this family business.”
Burda shapes the German media landscape for decades with his magazines such as the news magazine ‘Focus’ and the illustrated ‘Bunte’. He invested in the digital early and massively. On Sunday (February 9th) Burda celebrates his 85th birthday. The media and digital group Hubert Burda Media in Munich and Offenburg is 100 percent family and should remain.
The children take over
It was recently known that Burda withdraw and his children Elisabeth Burda Furtwängler and Jacob Burda have come to the fore since February 1. In his most recent statement, it said: “With special joy, I can now pass on this deposit, this wonderful company, to my children Elisabeth and Jacob. The fact that the two decided to take on entrepreneurial and publishing responsibility and to lead Burda into the future in challenging times makes me proud and fill me with great confidence. “
In the future, the fourth generation of the Burda family will be will direct the family -owned family company, which has been working publicly since 1903, with almost 10,000 employees and annual sales with around 2.8 billion euros (2023). The children of Burda’s marriage come from Burda with actress Maria Furtwängler (58). The couple separated years ago. Family members are not responsible for operational management, but a board.
Sewing magazine and ‘Bambi’

Burda, who was born in Heidelberg, studied art history, archeology and sociology and did her doctorate in the 1960s. After a division of inheritance with his brothers Franz and Frieder, Burda took over the business with 15 magazines in the 1980s. He made an international group from the southern German publisher of his parents Aenne and Franz Burda.
