PSV remains in the title race and increases Willem II relegation concerns

PSV easily took three points against Willem II. The people from Eindhoven were 4-2 too strong for the club from Tilburg. Because of the victory, PSV can continue to dream of a possible national title. Willem II is the new bottom of the Eredivisie.

76 seconds had been played and the ball was already in Willem II’s goal. It was Ritsu Doan who was able to shoot the ball free on Philipp Max’s instructions. The Tilburgers must have traveled to Eindhoven with all good intentions, but the tactical plan could be renewed fairly quickly.

However, there was a bit of a smell to the first goal. In the attack, Carlos Vinícius comes back from an offside position and plays the ball to a teammate. The goal comes a few seconds later. Nevertheless, referee Jochem Kamphuis decided that the goal remained. Why is still unclear, but Willem II will have reason enough to complain about this.

Kevin Hofland’s team is fighting against relegation, although there was not much to see on the field in the first half. The Tilburgers did not get into the duels while PSV thought they could win at half power. It also looked like it was going to be an easy afternoon when Cody Gakpo headed in the 2-0.

Still exciting
Just before the break it became exciting again in Eindhoven. Ché Nunnely headed a beautiful ball behind goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo. A goal that did not fit within the game of the Tilburgers. PSV woke up with a start and increased the lead a minute later. Fortunately, Eran Zahavi got the ball in front of his feet and was able to easily make it 3-1.

Again the match seemed decided but Willem II came out of the dressing room well. It showed more effort and that was soon rewarded. Elton Kabangu slid a rebound into the goal. 3-2 and so the tension was back in the game again.

Not a high level
The entertainment value of the match was significantly higher than the level. That became clear once again with PSV’s 4-2. A long ball was shot into the own goal in a very clumsy way by Wessel Dammers. A big mistake by the central defender who ended the game.

With the win, PSV can continue to hope for the title. Next week, Roger Schmidt’s team will continue the title fight with an away game against Feyenoord. Earlier that day, Ajax played at AZ. Then it will become clear whether the people of Eindhoven can still believe in the national championship.

Willem II is the new bottom of the Eredivisie and will continue the relegation battle next week with a home game against Heracles. The Tilburgers will have to take points there if they want to keep an eye on enforcement.

Another injury
A stain on PSV’s victory was the failure of Carlos Vinícius. The striker was once again in the starting lineup because Götze was home sick. But before halftime, the Brazilian dropped out with a muscle injury. Something that happens too often with the people of Eindhoven this season. Players fall in bunches. Every player in the squad has had at least one injury this season. A point of attention for the upcoming season.
