PSV must continue to fear, British media draw parallels with last season: ‘It’s 2022 all over again’ | Dutch football

There is plenty of attention in the British media for Tuesday evening’s spectacle between Rangers FC and PSV in the play-offs of the Champions League. According to the British newspapers, PSV must guard against the same scenario as last year, when it lost at home to the Scots. “The stage is now set for an almighty meeting in the Netherlands.”

“There is plenty to think about, but Rangers may hold out hope,” writes the BBC. Manager Michael Baele praised PSV’s attacking power prior to the game and in the first half it sometimes seemed as if Rangers were hesitating to attack. The team at Ibrox became a bit more positive after Matondo’s 2-1. It must have hurt that they had to swallow the equalizer so quickly, but Baele knows that his team can do much better than this. They’ll have to do that next week, but that’s a challenge for then.’

In the Daily Records is it about the parallels with last year. ‘It’s 2022 all over again’, writes the Scottish newspaper. Rangers will hope for a replica of last year after the 2-2 draw against PSV. There may be new players and coaches for both teams, but just like last year, Rangers abroad will have to finish the job. The stage is now set for an almighty encounter in the Netherlands, where Rangers will undoubtedly be happy with a 1-0 like last time.’

‘Ibrox echoed with noise before the game and in the breathless opening minutes the decibels increased as Cantwell almost took advantage of a weak defense from PSV. Moments later, home goalkeeper Jack Butland stopped a shot from Lang as the smooth-moving visitors broke out with pace and goal in mind,” wrote The Guardian.

The British medium saw PSV come back from behind twice. Matondo’s pace caused problems for PSV, as did his finish. A sweeping play from Rangers enabled Cantwell to move forward to find Dessers, whose brilliant pass knocked out the PSV defence, then Matondo flicked the ball past Benítez. However, Ibrox was soon silenced again when Luuk de Jong nodded in a header from a corner by Bakayoko.’

Also The Guardian also talked about the similar situation last season. “Michael Beale’s side will be looking for a similar result to last year in the Netherlands next Wednesday evening, when Rangers recorded a 1-0 win in Eindhoven.”

“A lot of attention was paid to the fact that Rangers and PSV would differ a lot from last year,” write the Scottish newspaperThe Scotman. ‘That the Dutch would not misjudge Rangers again. But again similar danger loomed when Abdallah Sima turned what seemed like a lost game for Rangers with an opening goal that came completely out of the blue.

Bee The Scotman they think that manager Beale should consider Rangers’ draw against PSV as a win. PSV, without ever showing the dominance and fluidity that was expected of them, had more than twice as much ball possession. But when it comes to fighting spirit and passion, Baele’s men were at least equal. Rangers’ ability to tie the game should be considered a win.’

There was also attention for the trainer of PSV. “Peter Bosz showed he wasn’t afraid by posting Sergiño Dest on the left side of his defense just two days after coming over from Barcelona.” At the BBC Ismael Saibari was even named man of the match. Saibari deserves the prize just for the step that enabled Ibrahim Sangare to score the equalizer. “He was a diamond in the mud of Ibrox.”
