Want to become champions at the very last moment, how often did that happen in the history of PSV? Studio040 dived into the archives and found three situations that came quite close.

What nobody had expected happened anyway. One competition before the end of the competition, PSV conquered the lead in the Eredivisie this season. This allows Peter Bosz’s team to become champions on Sunday. It is surprising, but not unique. It happened three times before that in the end of the competition the people of Eindhoven decided the title fight in their favor, For example, Studio040 listed.

Most fans will still be clearly on the sights of the 2006/2007 season. On the final day, title favorite AZ did not win at Excelsior. Thanks to a 5-1 victory over Vitesse, PSV then bumped over a goal difference over Ajax. The championship of the 2016/2017 season, where the Amsterdammers at De Graafschap unexpectedly draws, is also fresh in the memory with many PSV supporters.

Exciting title fight
That will be less of the championship in 1963. The club then won the fourth national championship in the history of PSV, and the first since the start of professional football in the Netherlands. But there was an exciting title fight in advance.

The competition then consisted of sixteen clubs, so there were only thirty rounds. During the season it was close together in the head of the Eredivisie. Ajax, PSV, Sparta and DOS Utrecht competed with each other for the lead. Only four games before the end of the competition achieved first place PSV.

An eclatant victory over Ajax: 5-2
In the 26th round, the people of Eindhoven took the lead by a draw against Feyenoord; Sparta lost to NAC Breda. Sparta got the round of play a new tick, so Ajax came in second place on goal difference, two points behind PSV. The Eindhoven team then booked a draw at AVC Heracles, the current Heracles Almelo.

Ajax was therefore approaching on one point of PSV. At that time, a team received only two points for a victory. PSV could be overtaken for the Amsterdammers because in the second last round PSV – Ajax was on the program.

Good feeling
The Amsterdammers went to Eindhoven with a good feeling, because Ajax had overclass Willem II a week earlier with 7-0. They also won the last five games. Various PSV players were injured, namely Brusselsers, Louwers and Van der Meer. Ajax was good and complete.

Under the watchful eye of 18,000 spectators, PSV managed to beat the Amsterdam team 5-2 in his own house. That was somewhat flattering; Ten minutes before the end it was ‘only’ 3-2 for a ‘technical superior’ PSV, the newspaper Gooi- en Eemlander wrote in 1963. When ten minutes before the end of Ajax-right behind Schaapdonk was sent off the field for the kicking of PSV member Fons van Wissen, the Eindhoven players finally made the match of Ajax and a goal point of Ajax and a goal point of Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point of Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and a goal point of Ajax and a goal point from Ajax and Ajax’s goal point.

Some trivia about the championship of that year: as a reward, the Philips board sent the team on holiday to the football malla of that time: Brazil. In addition, PSV coach Bram Appel was the first Dutch head coach to become a Dutch champion since the introduction of professional football in the Netherlands.

1976: SHOP match with Rotterdammers (4-1)
Also in 1976 the ending of the Eredivisie was unprecedentedly exciting. Two games before the end of the competition, PSV and Feyenoord were the same in points, with PSV on goal difference in first place. And the second to last league match was PSV – Feyenoord on the program.

That competition was won with convincing figures by the Eindhoven players, who put the Rotterdammers aside 4-1.

De Volkskrant described a common game in the match report: “Van Hanegem deliberately stepped on the leg of the lying René van de Kerkhof, Wille van de Kerkhof Kicked Michel van der Korput and Wim Rijsbergen went on the hand of François,” the newspaper wrote.

Van der Kuijlen
PSV, which started the game nervously, managed to set up on the basis of Willy van der Kuijlen. Skiet Willy took care of two goals in that match and gave an assist. Willy van de Kerkhof also signed for a goal and an assist.

Due to the victory, the team came to Feyenoord two points and was no longer possible to find out for the Rotterdammers due to the much better goal difference. In the final game, PSV played a draw against Go Ahead, but that, because a win only yielded two points, no longer in danger the championship.

Two goals for
One even more exciting conclusion was in the 1990/1991 season. Already a few matches before the end, Ajax and PSV balanced each other in the champion match. Both teams had just as many points and it was also close together in terms of goal difference.

The KNVB previously looked back on the ending in 1991:

In the second last round, the Eindhoven team lost 4-1 to a strong FC Groningen, but Ajax also did not win from low-flyer SVV Schiedam, and went into the boat 1-0. At that time, the goal difference was two goals in favor of PSV.

3-0
So everything arrived on the last day of play. PSV played at home against FC Volendam where Ajax played at home against Vitesse. Gerald Vanenburg opened the score in the Philips Stadium after half an hour of playing, resulting in the goal difference to +3. Ajax scored twice at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, making the lead only 1 goal.

It took about fifteen minutes that Ajax was so close to PSV. PSV signed for the 2-0 in the sixtieth minute and for the 3-0 in the ninetieth minute. Ajax also won 3-0, so the scale went to Eindhoven for the fifth time in six years.
