PSV achieves a good result despite Benítez blunder on a visit to Rangers

PSV drew 2-2 on a visit to Rangers FC. In Scotland, it looked painfully wrong due to a blunder by goalkeeper Walter Benítez. Fortunately, Armando Obispo provided a good starting position with an effective header. PSV can finish it next week in the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven to reach the group stage of the Champions League.

There was no problem for PSV, but there was suddenly a blunder that we have not yet seen with the goalkeeper this season. Where last season regularly sparked the goalkeeper discussion in the City of Light, that did not seem to be the case this season. Walter Benítez has been a reliable goalkeeper until now. However, twenty minutes before the end of the European meeting with Rangers FC, he made a painful mistake. Fortunately for the goalkeeper, PSV went home with an apparently satisfactory result.

It was PSV that took the lead in the first half. After Luuk de Jong had shot over in a promising position in the 3rd minute, it was hit half an hour later. From a corner, the ball came through the ball at the feet of Ibrahim Sangaré, who scored the 0-1.

Rangers fierce
That lead was not deserved and of long duration. Because within three minutes the ball was in the other side too. Antonio Colak was able to clear a pass from James Tavernier. Despite the fact that Rangers FC was the better team at home, it was actually only the first real chance of the Scots.

PSV had been warned about the atmosphere at Ibrox. Many experts already said in advance that Rangers FC had to rely on the home game. That was also reflected in the game image in the first half.

Blunder Benitez
After the break it was PSV that came out of the dressing room stronger. The level of the match was still very mediocre. But the moment you thought that the visitors were going to make the 1-2, things went completely wrong on the other side. A long-range free kick went straight for Walter Benítez. The goalkeeper seemed to be able to grab the ball easily but struggled. The result was that the ball ended up behind the PSV goalie and Rangers took a 2-1 lead.

We already saw that PSV can show resilience against AS Monaco last week. Again, it came back from beaten position. It was Armando Obispo who headed in from a corner and helped PSV to a good starting position.

It stayed with this 2-2. A draw that you sign for in advance. In its own Philips Stadium, PSV can finish it just like against AS Monaco. Based on the second half, there is enough perspective to start from.
